Public Works Laborer

City of Poulan is now accepting applications for Public Works Laborer positions.  Applications can be picked up at City Hall, Monday - Friday from 9AM to 5PM.  City Hall closes for lunch from 12PM to 1PM daily.  This job is open until filled.  

This position is responsible for performing duties requested by the Public Works Supervisor.  The position is responsible for maintaining city streets, curbside pickup, and occasional water maintenance.  The positions may be seasonal or year round, on a full-time or part-time basis.

Essential Duties Include But Not Limited To:
  • Operation of a small truck
  • Clean yard debris, household materials, and metal from curbside
  • Visually inspect vehicles for mechanical defects and report finds to supervisor
  • Operate lawn mower and weed eater for maintenance of City right-of-ways, City cemetery, and other maintained City property and other areas designated by Supervisor
  • Authorized laborers may operate backhoe, dump truck, and/or other heavy equipment
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service
  • Performs pick and shovel work in digging, widening, etc
  • Performs traffic flagging, IF properly certified
  • Clears and cleans roadside gutters, drains, and other drainage structures
  • Assists and performs loading and unloading truck
  • Performs painting and routine equipment maintenance
  • Other Labor-oriented tasks not defined above

Essential Responsibilities Include But Not Limited To:
  • Providing continuous maintenance of City Property, and other areas requested by Supervisor
  • Keeping a clean and safe work and living environment to the Citizens of Poulan
  • Complete work orders requested by Citizens
  • Properly filling out and signing off on work orders
  • Once a week, flush all fire hydrants and complete accurate reports

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must possess a Valid Driver's License
  • ​Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen
  • Must be familiar with hand tools, and other used equipment
  • Strength and mobility to work in a typical field or shop maintenance setting, including stamina to perform sustained physical labor, to include standing, walking, climbing, and working in confined or awkward spaces
  • Strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment up to 100 pounds
  • Vision and capability to read printed materials
  • Adequate hearing and clear speech to communicate in person or over radio or telephone
  • Ability to complete and follow assigned duties
  • Possess respect toward co-workers and Supervisor

Desired Education And Experience:
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required
  • Prior experiences in job duties preferred but not required

Majority of work is performed outside. Work is to be performed in all weather, unless stated otherwise by Supervisor.  Traveling and operating of public works equipment.  Work may include extended hours or call in for emergency situations.

Poulan Police Department has job openings for Full-Time and Part-Time Patrol Officers.  Applications can be picked up at City Hall Mon-Fri 9AM to 5PM.  City Hall closes daily from 12PM to 1PM for lunch.  Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.
